When I became a Manager I never anticipated that I would be asked to manage a situation where an employee was unable to do part of their job or unable to do all of their job, because of an illness or injury. I know I am not alone. This is something that I was not prepared for and something that I found to be a significant challenge. I could not find a definitive ‘right’ way to do things and mostly people told me what not to do. I, like many of my colleagues, was tempted to look the other way and wait and see what happened. I did this for a while, and unsurprisingly, the situation became more complex. What I learnt was that doing nothing is not the right answer for me as a Manager, for the employee or for my organisation. I needed to find a way to move forward for the benefit of all parties. This course is designed to allow participants, such as Amy, to find the best way to move forward when managing employees who are ill or injured. It is a practical course which assists participants balance the multitude of relevant pieces of legislation, caselaw and practices with common sense, compassion and risk mitigation. We will also debunk some of the myths about what you can’t do in these circumstances.
